LABORATORY RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Dr. Kendall Received Global Recognition, Acclaim for his Environmental Toxicology Research.
The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry awarded the 2021 Founders Award to Dr. Ronald J. Kendall in rocognition of an outstanding career and exceptional contribution in the environmental sciences, at the
SETAC Europe 32nd Annual Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. The prestigious Founders Award is the highest honor SETAC can bestow.
Dr. Lenka Halamkova was recently invited to the SciX 2022 Conference being held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky in October, 2022.
SciX is organized by the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) bringing together leading scientists across many disciplines for scientific exchange and it accomplishes its mission through world-class technical programs, exhibitions, and a variety of informal networking opportunities.
Dr. Jan Halamek was recently invited to serve on the “Forensic Olfactronic”, international workshop, which initial meeting will take place in Prague, Czech Republic in September 2022.
The workshop will accommodate a closer community of established experts in the field of human scent and chemical analysis for forensic purposes, as well as the individual identification of persons. Workshop is organized by University of Chemistry and Technology in collaboration with the Police Presidium of the Czech Republic, the aim is to organize a community of forensic researchers from the Europe, USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea and perhaps from Russia.
This working group will also form a steering committee for a future international colloquium/meeting on “Human scent chemical analysis for forensic purposes”.
Dr. Presley Elected as Chairperson of Editorial Board of Journal of Vector Ecology
Dr. Steve Presley was recently elected as Chairperson of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Vector Ecology (JVE). The JVE is the peer-reviewed professional journal of the Society for Vector Ecology which is a professional organization committed to solving many complex problems encountered in the field of vector biology and control. Among these are the suppression of nuisance organisms and disease vectors through integration of control elements, such as environmental management, biological control, public education, and appropriate chemical control technology. Dr. Presley also serves on the Society’s Board of Directors as the Director for the South Central United States.

In an interesting twist to the cotton story, cotton from the High Plains of Texas is getting a favorable consideration from South Indian textile spinners.
In a recent phone call with Velmurugan Shanmugam, general manager of Jayalakshmi Textiles, based in Aruppukkottai in South India, revealed that they are seriously looking at cotton from the High Plains of Texas in their raw material mix. Another large mill reportedly has also booked an order of about 1,000 tons of U.S. cotton, again showing interest in imported cotton.
Congratulations to Kruuttika Satbhai for receiving the Society of Toxicology 2022 John Doull Risk Assessment Endowment Award!
Satbhai won the endowment award, presented by the Society of Toxicology's Risk Assessment Specialty Section, for her research on a class of pollutants called perfluorinated compounds (PFAS), which have been found in local groundwater.
Congratulations Amanda Emert and Terrell Hilliard for being award fellowships from the Graduate School for the 2022-23 academic year!!
Amanda was awarded COVID Dissertation Funding!
Terrell was awarded a Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship!
Congratulations to PH.D. Student, Bianca Rendon
Bianca Rendon was selected to participate in a 21-day research project to study the establishment and spread of avian malaria on Navarino Island, Chile. Navarino Island is located off the southernmost coast of Chile and is extremely remote and rugged. The research project that Bianca will be working on is a University of North Texas grant that is a component of the Sub-Antarctic Biocultural Conservation Program, and is supported by the National Science Foundation International Research Experience for Students (NSF-IRES).
Congratulations to the 2020-21 Outstanding Students!
Environmental and Human Health Outstanding PhD Students:
