Undergraduate Minor in Environmental Toxicology

Environmental Toxicology is a multidisciplinary academic field that includes biology, chemistry, ecology to study our environment. More so, as practitioners in this field we are interested in harmful effects of chemicals, toxins and other physical agents on living organisms. We like to study our environment and different ecosystems to understand how toxic substances affect everyone - animals and humans!

Environmental Toxicology

Minor Degree Program

The Department of Environmental Toxicology offers graduate and undergraduate (minor) programs within the College of Arts & Sciences. The courses are designed to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to learn about and conduct scientific research in the Department of Environmental Toxicology. Generally, a background in the natural, physical, or health sciences will provide the necessary preparation for completion of these courses. Interested students should contact faculty within the department.

The Environmental Toxicology Minor program (18 hours) composed of coursework emphasizing the principles of toxicology, the environmental fate of chemicals, statistical approaches to study design, data handling, and data analysis, and seminars in environmental toxicology. Supplemental coursework, research hours are chosen by the student with the guidance of faculty advisor.

Courses may be used simultaneously for major and minor (double-dip), however, may NOT be simultaneously used for minor to minor programs.

Students are required to take 9 credit hour

from the following list of courses:

Keep in mind: Certain courses require that prerequisites be taken before enrollment in desired course. Prerequisite courses do not count toward the minor.

ENTX 3300 - Biological Effects of Chemicals in the Environment (3 SCH):

Introduces students to the biological effects following exposure to chemicals in the environment.

ENTX 3301 - Introduction to Ecotoxicology (3 SCH): A comprehensive overview of wildlife and ecological problems with a focus on toxicology.

ENTX 4325 - Principles of Toxicology I (3 SCH): Prerequisite: Senior standing or consent of instructor. First half of two-semester course. Examines foundations of toxicological sciences, covering principles, disposition and half of toxicity mechanisms.

ENTX 4326 - Principles of Toxicology II (3 SCH): Prerequisite: Senior standing or consent of instructor. Second half of two-semester course. Examines foundations of toxicological sciences, covering principles, disposition and half of toxicity mechanisms.

ENTX 4371 - Procedures and Techniques in Ecologic Risk Assessment (3 SCH): Designed to provide students with a solid foundation in risk assessment methods. Students will learn how the ecological risk assessment framework developed by U.S. EPA is used to assess the potential hazards of chemicals.
